“When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” – Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV) In Christ, we are “sealed” with the Holy Spirit. But what does this mean? The seal of the Holy Spirit holds four profound truths about who we are in Him. First, it represents ownership. Just as ancient seals marked ownership, the Holy Spirit marks us as God’s own, claiming us as His beloved children. We belong to Him, and our identity is now deeply rooted in His love. As 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” Secondly, the Holy Spirit’s seal offers us security. Like seals used to protect valuable items, the Holy Spirit protects and holds us securely in God’s love. No challenge or failure can separate us from this love; as Romans 8:38 assures, “Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.” Furthermore, this seal confirms our authenticity as children of God. In ancient times, a seal verified the legitimacy of a document, and likewise, the presence of the Holy Spirit affirms that we are adopted and accepted by God, truly transformed. Romans 8:9 affirms, “You are controlled by the Spirit if the Spirit of God lives in you.” Lastly, this seal is a guarantee—a down payment on our eternal inheritance. Just as a deposit ensures a promise, the Holy Spirit assures us that God’s work in us will be completed. Philippians 1:6 encourages us, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” These truths remind us of God’s deep commitment to us and the safety we have as His own. Begin each day by surrendering to the Holy Spirit, asking Him to reveal His ownership, protection, authenticity, and guarantee in fresh ways.
Prayer
