Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT) – “Don\’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Devotional:

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus warns us about the fleeting nature of material wealth. He encourages us to store up treasures in heaven—things that are eternal and cannot be lost. The treasures we accumulate on earth, whether wealth or possessions, are vulnerable to decay and loss. But the treasures that come from a life devoted to God—faith, love, obedience—are secure forever.

When we focus on earthly possessions, it can lead us to comparison, dissatisfaction, and a constant desire for more. This path can rob us of true joy and fulfillment. But when we make God our treasure, our hearts are filled with the peace, joy, and purpose that no material possession can offer.

One powerful way to guard our hearts against materialism is by surrendering to God each morning. In His presence, we can realign our focus, letting go of the allure of possessions and renewing our hearts to seek Him first. A daily surrender helps us keep our “first love” for God alive, ensuring that He remains our greatest treasure, above all else.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our ultimate provider and treasure. Help us guard our hearts against materialism and keep our focus on You. Reveal anything in our lives that competes with our devotion to You. We surrender those things to You and trust that Your presence is enough. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
